Alternative Therapies
Treatments offered in our spa, are based on the very basic principles of Alternative Health Therapies. Herewith follows a short list of techniques:
Magnetic Therapy
The Earth is in fact a giant magnet. Courtesy of Einstein and other physicists we now have terms for the four forces which give and maintain order on our planet: the weak nuclear force, the strong nuclear force, gravity and electromagnetic.
The energy field we are born into is vital for our health:
- Yin and yang
- Positive and Negative
- Hot and Cold
- Dark and Light
The fact is that opposites are dynamic, creating change. But these days we are receiving less of the natural magnetic field we used to get from the planet. Modern life insulates us. We no longer walk barefoot on the earth, drink water from a tap travel everywhere in metal cars. Radio waves, microwaves from satellites, electric fields from overhead cables and even our own lightning and power have deplete a significant amount of our natural energy source.
How does Magnetic Therapy work?
There are many theories out there concerning how magnets work to relieve pain-
- One theory suggests that iron in our blood is affected by the magnets.
- Another theory states that magnets stimulate the brain and affects the pineal gland.
- Another possible theory is that ionization occurs in the blood after it passes through a magnetic field.
- The Schumann Resonance may have something to do with human responding positively to magnetic field therapy.
Healing Properties and Benefits seen of Magnets:
- It helps alleviate pain and improve mobility of arthritic joints.
- It reduces bruising and swelling
- It aids recovery of torn ligaments, muscles and tendons
- It improves micro- circulation and healing of scar tissue
- Recovery of nerve sensation
- It helps removal of waste products from the blood, i.e. lactic acids, calcium, cholesterol and fat deposits.
- Alleviates migraine and headaches.
Reflexology
The ancient art of reflexology is based on the premise that our bodies are reflected in miniature in our feet and hands, and by massaging these specific "reflex points" we can enhance our overall health and wellbeing.
The feet were worked in Ancient China in conjunction with acupuncture, the feet massaged first to stimulate the whole body and find areas of disturbance, and the acupuncture needles then applied as fine tuning.
Shiatsu
- Shiatsu works by stimulating the body’s vital energy flow ("Ki" in Japanese) in order to restore equilibrium levels.
- The fundamental principle of Shiatsu is that the giver, with clear mental focus, keeps in sustained stationary contact with a receiving person's body using thumbs, fingers, palms and sometimes elbows and knees, maintaining sufficient patience to wait for a response in the receiver's subtle energy or Ki flow.
- A variety of stretching, rotating and levering techniques may be required to reduce the receivers' muscular and mental "holding on", but essentially stationary pressure or "connection" at the appropriate angle and depth is what differentiates shiatsu and massage.
Rolfing
Rolfing refers to a system of Structural Integration and manual therapy developed by Dr Ida Rolf over 50 years of study.
- It is an original and scientifically proven system of body restructuring and movement education, which releases the body from lifelong patterns of tension and bracing, and allows the force of gravity to realign the body's segments.
Colour Therapy
Consider the facts:
- "Nothing on this earth is here just by chance; everything in nature is here for a purpose. Colour is no exception. All we need to do is to heighten our awareness of the energy of colour and how it can transform our lives."

- The chakras are traditionally numbered from one to seven, working from the base chakra to the crown. Each chakra is a high point of energy in the aura. The major chakras are therefore highly charged areas within the aura, and they influence a specific part of the human body. Rather than thinking of the physical body affecting the state of the chakras, you need to reverse the idea and realise it is the chakras that eventually affect the body.
- An aura is a form of energy, in common with everything else in the universe. Because it is made of energy, your aura attracts other forms of energy, not all of which are favourable, positive and helpful. We can discover practical ways to rid ourselves of negative energy and learn to protect our aura in difficult situations because an unhealthy or damaged aura will eventually lead to some form of illness because the person is being deprived of energy and vitality.
- "Hope deferred maketh the heart sick: but when the desire cometh, it is a tree of life." Proverbs 13:12
Alexander Technique
The Alexander Technique is a taught self-help method to reduce stressful muscle tension habits which limit our functioning, cause us pain, and distort the naturally graceful carriage and poise we had as children.
How does it work?
- Observation: what are you doing?
- Inhibition: choose not to respond habitually.
- Direction: composed of the 4 concepts of good use which is =
- To let the neck be free and to let the head tilt forward and rest on top of the spine.
- To allow the torso to fan outwards in width.
- To allow the legs to release away from the hip joint.
- To allow the shoulders to lengthen out to the side and to float on the ribcage.
Bach Remedies
Dr Edward Bach studied medicine, first in Birmingham and later at the University College Hospital, London. As a bacteriologist and pathologist he eventually undertook original research into vaccines in his own research laboratory. Dr Bach aspired to a more holistic approach to medicine and accepted a post at the Royal London Homoeopathic Hospital.
"Just as he had abandoned his home, office and work, Dr Bach began to abandon the scientific method and its reliance on laboratories and reductionism. He fell back instead on his natural gifts as a healer, and more and more allowed his intuition to guide him to the right plants."
Dr Edward Bach completed his work, listing 38 floral remedies (http://www.bachcentre.com/centre/remedies.htm); he claimed could alter the disharmonies of personality and emotional state that trouble us all from time to time. The most popular of these is a combination of five of the remedies he used for any emergency situation and he named it the Rescue Remedy.
Megavitamin Therapy
Most of the chemical processes that occur in the skin emit free radicals. In the body, the processing of food, producing energy and using energy creates free radicals. Breathing and using our muscles to perform functions creates free radicals. Manufacturing collagen or lipids or pigment produces free radicals. These free radicals can create damage to the components of the skin as they steal an electron from another component to make themselves complete and stable.
Some Free Radicals arise naturally during metabolism to neutralise bacteria and viruses. However, if free radical production becomes excessive and anti-oxidants aren't freely available, damage occur. Anti- oxidants neutralise free radicals by donating one of their own electrons, preventing the attack on stable molecules to occur. Although there are several enzyme systems within the body that scavenge free radicals, the principle micronutrient (vitamin) antioxidants are vitamin E, beta-carotene, and vitamin C.

Take into consideration:
Fruits and vegetables are a natural source of antioxidants, vitamins, minerals, and fibres. They also contain phytonutrients like quercetin, lycopene, flavonoids, and ellagic acid, which are potential heart protectors and cancer fighters.
The human body is designed to discharge 70% of its toxins through breathing. Breathing is unquestionably the single most important thing you can do to improve your life.
Proper oxygen delivery to all parts of your body is crucial to health and wellbeing. Oxygen is life.
Strong muscles equal healthier joints as well as activities such as walking and swimming that is not overstressing the joints. If you abuse your joints, then you pay a price.
Dr Gearhart explains: "As a person gains more and more weight, they become insulin resistant." That means the receptors is the cells that help insulin work are not sensitive to the insulin. The receptors are like a lock and insulin is the key- but when you’re insulin resistant, the two don't fit.
